Solar activity reached moderate levels. Newly assigned sunspot region 3030 just erupted with an M1.2-class solar flare. Radiation from the flare ionized the top of Earth's atmosphere, causing a shortwave radio blackout around the North Africa. Mariners and ham radio operators may have noticed unusual propagation effects at frequencies below ~20 MHz.

The sunspot responsible for today's blast has been visible for less than a day. Already it has unleashed 8 solar flares (seven Class flares and one M1.2-class flare). Future flares will become increasingly geoeffective as the active region turns toward Earth.

Growing sunspot AR3032 exploded on June 13th (0407 UT), producing an M3-class solar flare that lasted more than 3 hours. Extreme ultraviolet radiation from the flare caused a shortwave radio blackout over Japan, Northern Australia, SE Asia, China, India,
Siberia, and Micronesia, affecting frequencies below 30 MHz.

Also, the explosion hurled a CME into space. The US Air Force detected a Type II solar radio burst, which is usually caused by shock waves in the leading edge of a CME. NOAA forecasters are analyzing the data to see if the CME has an Earth-directed component.

(Solar Storm to Hit Earth's Magnetosphere on June 15 - Geomagnetic Storm Watch)

nemesis maturity
15.06.2022

The CME associated with the M3.4 flare that occurred at 13/04:07 UTC, is likely to skirt the Earth's magnetosphere at approximately the same time the onset of a positive polarity coronal hole is expected to impact Earth.

The combined effects will likely produce G1-G2 storming with a chance for G3-Strong storm levels if conditions occur simultaneously.

"Coronal Holes" are vast regions in the sun's atmosphere where magnetic fields open up and allow solar wind to escape. They look dark in ultraviolet images because the hot glowing plasma normally contained there is missing. In this case, the plasma is making a beeline for Earth.

Active conditions are expected to continue into 16 June. Forecasters will be monitoring the situation and additional watches, warnings, or alerts will be issued if conditions warrant.

A large coronal hole stretching across the northern hemisphere of the Sun is now facing Earth. NOAA forecasters say there is a chance of minor G1-class geomagnetic storm on July 6th, when a stream of solar wind is expected
to hit Earth's magnetic field.

"Coronal holes" are vast regions in the sun's atmosphere where magnetic fields open up and allow solar wind to escape. They look dark in ultraviolet images because the hot glowing plasma normally contained there is missing.

High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras on July 6th when the solar wind arrives. G1-class storms can produce Northern Lights as far south as US states ranging from Maine to Washington.

There are currently 5 numbered active regions on the visible solar disk. Sunspot AR3046 has a 'beta-gamma' magnetic field that harbors energy for M-class solar flares.

CME Impact Sparks G1-Class Geomagnetic Storm
A magnetic filament on the sun erupted June 30th, hurling a CME into space.
The glancing blow sparked a minor G1-class storm earlier today (July 4, 2022).

(A Crack In Earth's Magnetic Field/Geomagnetic Storm In Progress - Big New Sunspot Turns Toward Earth)

nemesis maturity

Yesterday, July 7th, a crack opened in Earth's magnetic field--and it stayed open for nearly 14 hours. Solar wind poured through the gap to fuel a minor albeit long-lasting G1-class geomagnetic storm.

The crack was opened by a co-rotating interaction region (CIR), which hit Earth's magnetic field during the early hours of July 7th. CIRs are transition zones between fast- and slow-moving streams of solar wind. They contain shock waves that often cause geomagnetic storms. NOAA analysts think a CME might have been embedded in the solar wind just ahead of the CIR, thus delivering a double blow. https://spaceweather.com/

BIG SUNSPOT
Big new sunspot AR3053 is growing and turning toward Earth. The sunspot now has not just one but two dark cores wider than Earth. These dimensions make it an easy target for backyard solar telescopes.

(Solar Storm Incoming: A Full Halo CME is Expected to Hit Earth's Magnetic Field this Weekend)

nemesis maturity
22.07.2022

Geomagnetic storms are possible on July 23rd when a full-halo CME is expected to hit Earth's magnetic field. The storm cloud was hurled toward Earth by a solar tsunami eruption. Soon after the explosion, the US Air Force reported a Type II solar radio burst. Characteristics of the burst suggested that a CME was tearing through the sun's atmosphere at a speed of 1063 km/s (2.4 million mph). The CME is squarely inside the Earth strike zone.

NOAA forecasters say that G1- to G2-class (minor to moderate) storms are likely with a slight chance of escalating to category G3 (strong).

CME-Aktivität hält an - geomagnetische Sturmbedingungen könnten in den nächsten Tagen anhalten
(CME Activity Continues - Geomagnetic Storm Conditions Could Persist During the Next Several Days)

nemesis maturity
19.08.2022

The past two days have had multiple geomagnetic storms--the result of a CME strike on Aug. 17th. None was as strong as the G3-class event originally forecast. However, G1 and G2-class storms are still possible Aug. 19th, 20th, and 21st in response to additional CMEs on the way.

Geomagnetic storm conditions could persist during the next several days which would be great news for aurora sky watchers.

THE EXPLOSIONS CONTINUE
In the past 24 hours, active Region 3078 has produced six M-class solar flares and more than 18 C-flares. Most of the explosions hurled debris into space. In the early hours of August 19th, AR3078 erupted with a long duration M1.6-class solar flare. The blast was bookended by multiple
explosions hours earlier and later. The fusillade could cause additional grazing CME impacts here on Earth Aug. 20th and 21st, extending the ongoing spate of geomagnetic activity.

Radio Blackout
The long duration M-class solar flare caused a minor radio blackout over the SE Asia and China.

AR 3078 will remain a threat for additional flares as it approaches the southwest limb.

Katastrophaler Sonnensturm 2023?

nemesis maturity
11.01.2023

The sun released another X-flare on Jan. 10th, this time from new sunspot AR3186. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory captured the X1-class explosion hurling a plume of debris into space. Τhe region is not yet directly facing Earth, so any associated CME will likely be directed away from our planet.

Radiation from the flare ionized the top of Earth's atmosphere, causing a shortwave radio blackout over the South Pacific. Mariners and ham radio operators may have noticed fadeouts and other unusual propagation effects at frequencies below ~30 MHz.

This is the 3rd X-flare in a week, and each flare has come from a different sunspot. It's not just a single active region; the whole sun is becoming more active. NOAA forecasters say there is a 30% chance of another X-flare on Jan. 11th. No Earth-directed CMEs were observed in available coronagraph imagery.
