(Large Prominence Eruption - A CME Produced by the Giant Eruption could Give Earth a Glancing Blow)
nemesis maturity
Large Prominence Eruption: This event took place earlier today (April 9)
and extended millions of kilometres into space. GOES-16 SUVI captured the event in extreme ultraviolet light. NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory was also captured the large eruption.
When a prominence erupts, the released material is part of a larger magnetic structure called Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs). When directed toward Earth, CMEs can interact with our Earth’s magnetic field and trigger a geomagnetic storm, with bright auroras and the potential for disturbance in communications and electrical power networks.
NOAA forecasters await fresh data from SOHO coronagraphs to confirm if the CME has an Earth-directed component.
